I have long lamented the lack of a great, or even a good, burger in this town.
There were always pretty good bar burgers, The Highland Tap (best bar in Atlanta) has a good "bar burger" meaning a bit too large, expensive, and you couldn't really get it to go.
I tried everywhere..there was great one at the second location of that infamous redneck joint up on Marietta Highway..the second location was in Buckhead in the early 90's...a country type bar...across from Otto's...it ended up becoming an English pub at some point...lasted a couple of years.
Folks sent me to Mr. C's on Howell Mill when I lived over there...OK, not great.
That little joint next to Moe's and Joe's in the Highland's when I lived over there...OK, not great.
The Vortex...most overrated burger in the universe...usually dry, poor meat quality, stale bun...what a joke...I was embarassed to take anyone there and claim it was any good. And the folks at Creative Loafing should be shot for giving out them the "Best Burger" award.
But we have been delivered...FIVE GUYS has come to Atlanta. The original FIVE GUYS is on Columbia Pike in Arlington, Virginia. Storefront location, burgers and fries only..no tables...free peanuts to eat while you wait.....
Sign over the grill told which small town in usually Maryland or Delaware that day's potatoes came from....dear Lord, it was heavenly...we used to go on Saturday after a Georgetown or Capital Hill Friday night, and miss it on Sunday when it was closed.
The burgers...real high quality hand made double patties....American cheese only (as it should be...it's an AMERICAN food) melted into the meat. Choice of a million different toppings...try it with A-1!
It's here now...couple of locations in Atlanta...franchised by former Redskins kicker Mark Mosely from the Gibbs Super Bowl years...closest to my house is in the new Lindberg development in front of the MARTA station. I've been four times in the last two weeks. Get the cajun fries..they're just the regular hand cut with the skins on with cajun spices sprinkled on.
Oh, and it's better when you get it to go. They wrap them up tight and the super fresh bun gets a chance to absorb just enough grease to make it nice and sloppy......
I'll be there Wednesday for lunch after a long election night..............
To find one close to you........FIVE GUYS
